The tree-following link box has closed for another month. Any tree-related post is acceptable in these lock-down times and everyone has found something interesting to say.
Here in Cardiff the dark winter days start to lengthen perceptibly. The New Year has started with a very cold snap, with bitter north-easterly winds and night-time temperatures hovering around zero. But there has also been plenty of welcome sunshine.
I have said goodbye to the Persian ironwood tree I have been following, even though I will still see it from my study window every day. I am about to launch my new tree for 2021.
You will find everyone’s updates below – enjoy exploring…
Erika Groth in Sweden – rowan tree
Alison at the Blackberry Garden – quinces pretend to be asleep
Pat – Squirrelbasket – Cardiff, Wales – a new tree for 2021
Crafty Green Poet – Juliet in Edinburgh, Scotland – silver birch
… and her update here
Andrew in Birmingham, UK – Kind Hearts and Corydalis – Rookery Park’s lime avenue
JayP – Amblings around Penwith (Cornwall) – Cornus kousa
If you are new to tree following, read all about the idea here.
Thanks so much to everyone who contributed in January. Why not join us next time? Just point us to any tree-related post you would like to share, using the link box published on the 7th of each month and lasting for a week. Although we all try to publish our tree followings every month, we are very forgiving if you post less often.
See you in February…
Hello Pat. This year Liz has chosen the Seven-son flower tree in her back garden and I’ve gone for a Hornbeam in the local park. I’ve just published a Tree following blog post and linked it here.
Take care. xx
Lovely to have you both back again with two more interesting species 🙂
I would really like to follow a tree but can’t work out what to do! What is a “linky box”?
The easiest way to participate is to click on the box that says “Mister Linky. You’re next!” at the end of the text in this blog post in a web browser. If you don’t see the box or can’t click on it try using another web browser or to change your safety settings.
Clicking on that box should bring you to a separate (popup) website where you can write the webbadress of the blogpost where you have published your tree following story of the month.
If you don’t have your own blog and don’t want to start a blog but still want to participate, try e-mailing Lucy and she can help you publish your tree following story: https://squirrelbasket.wordpress.com/tree-following/
Thanks for answering that query – I was a bit slow in looking at my comments. Late with everything these days!
Your answer was far better than mine 🙂
The link box appears at the bottom of the post and if it’s still open it should say “you’re next”.
If you click on that you should be able to add the link to your tree following post.
If you have a post and can’t work it out, just let me know in a comment and I will add it in manually. I tend to delete the linkbox and put the links in manually after the 14th of the month anyway…
Would love to have you on board!
By the way, love your blog – especially the tree with a hole in it – but can’t see where to click to “follow” it?
Best wishes 🙂
I’ve picked out a new tree to follow. A rowan that grows in a “corona-adapted” location right next to the house I live in. Then I suddenly realized that this new tree is the 8th tree that I’ve followed on my blog. Has it really been that long?!? It doesn’t feel like it.
Doesn’t time fly!
Lovely to have you back again 🙂
Sorry to be late in posting! I’ve chosen a silver birch tree in the same cemetery! One that the new Friends of the Cemetery group has fixed a bird box to, so I hope to be able to follow a bird family as well as the tree!

Not late – you have until the 14th and I usually don;t close the box on time anyway.
Lovely tree!
I will enjoy following it with you 🙂
I’ve only just come across your blog and the tree following, so thought, why ever not! So tomorrow I shall go and choose a tree (I do have a favourite tree but it is ‘out of reach’ thanks to the restrictions) and take some photos 🙂
I so look forward to seeing what you come up with. You are so welcome to join us!
Best wishes 🙂
Glad to be joining you again this year!
Your chosen poplar looks characterful and suitable gnarled – I look forward to reading the post properly 🙂
Andrew
So glad you are joining us again. And no, an avenue of ancient limes is definitely not a cop-out!
Although I always intended to pick an individual tree every year I followed an avenue of elms one year, too…
All the best for 2021 🙂
Hello Pat
Sorry about missing the gathering. My computer is in the shop for repair, fortunately under warranty. It happened at the same time our country started to fall apart. 2021 not much of an improvement just yet at least here. Hope you’re doing well.
You are SO missed!
I hope you will rejoin us soon.
Sadly you are still in “interesting” times politically. It will be good if you get inauguration day done without incident…
Best wishes for 2021 🙂
