Fungus in Cardiff’s Thompson’s Park

I’m a big fan of fungi and took these pictures in Thompson’s Park, Cardiff, in August, but I recently revisited, so I’m using that excuse to share them now. I had often seen this fungus, which I always thought was Trametes versicolor, turkeytail, on a tree stump in the park (see my January fungus foray here). But fellow blogger Earthstar tells me it’s giant polypore, Meripilus giganteus. (more…)

Jelly-like fungi on a rotting tree stump in Thompson’s Park, Cardiff

This year I will probably follow a tree in a small Cardiff park I hardly know – Thompson’s Park. But my latest search for a tree worthy of regular bulletins was overtaken by my wonder at all the fungi I saw on a damp afternoon walk there.

Thompson’s Park is one of Cardiff’s oldest, having opened to the public in 1891. I will no doubt share some general views in another post, but this time I am just excited by the fungi growing on the very old and decaying trees. Three of the species I saw were on one tall stump. (more…)

Well, at last I come to the end of my nature journey through 2010. I have been revisiting the little green wildlife book that accompanied my childhood and trying to tick off the plants and animals featured in its monthly sketchbook pages.

The book is “Wild Life Through the Year” by Richard Morse and it was published in 1942. You can read about earlier months here.

Well, it has given me a focus and made me open my eyes to the nature around me again after all these years…
