My first three ripe cherry tomatoes

I had high hopes of growing my own tomatoes this year but the awful summer has been totally against me. What a cold and wet wash-out!

It was maybe a decade ago when I last grew some Tumbler tomatoes in an outside container and, as usual in my gardening exploits, just as I was congratulating myself on a huge crop it was so weighty that it broke off the stem and ruined the plant. (more…)

The sycamore I am following in Llandaff Fields, Cardiff

This summer is so disappointing here in South Wales. Apart from a long dry spell in June, a little too cool and breezy to appreciate, the weather has been mostly wet and windy throughout July and August.

I don’t usually visit the big sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) in Llandaff Fields at the weekend but Sunday was the only dry day I could find.

The fields were busier than usual as the weekend is a time for local sports matches and we are just at that point where summer sports like cricket overlap with the start of rugby and football (soccer) seasons.

It’s that time again for the monthly tree-following get-together. Here in South Wales July was a complete wash-out, cold and wet, after the drought of June. And the beginning of August has been no better, although the Met Office forecasts some kind of proper summer weather soon.

I expect to visit the sycamore tree I am following in Cardiff’s Llandaff Fields some time this week and I hope you have all had a chance to inspect your trees. I look forward to seeing everyone’s news and pictures once again.
