View of St David's Cathedral, Pembrokeshire, from the gatehouse
In August we visited St David’s in the far west of Pembrokeshire and here are my pictures of the wonderful cathedral.
It is believed that it was built on the site of the monastery of St David, Abbot of Menevia, who died in the year 589.
Construction of the cathedral started in 1181, although it has been altered a lot since then, and in the early 14th century Bishop Gower built the nearby bishop’s palace, now a picturesque ruin.

You can read more about the cathedral and its saint by following the links at the bottom of this post. The friends of the cathedral are currently trying to raise £150,000 to restore the shrine of St David in the cathedral.

Great photos, lovely spot. When we went it rained though this didn’t diminish the beauty and serenity of the interior.
Thank you for your kind comment. I can imagine it would be a lovely shelter in a storm…
Although when we were there it was a “phew, what a scorcher” kind of day 🙂
I’ve always wanted to walk round a clerestory but have never found one open to the public. Some of your upward views make me want to visit – and I’m wondering why the worshipful atmosphere of a cathedral wouldn’t be the same without the pipes of and organ.
And very shiny organ pipes they were, too!
Haven’t seen that word many times – clerestory! Love it, although I had to look it up (or look up at it – for those who don’t know, it’s literally a “clear story” – the upper level of a big church, full of windows to let in the light)…
Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙂
I love the painted ceilings and the stained-glass windows.. beautiful 🙂
