The tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) in Cardiff’s Victoria Park
It has been a wet week here in South Wales but one morning I managed to find a weather window to visit the tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) in Cardiff’s Victoria Park.
There has not been much visible development since my last visit but Spring has sprung all around, with a patch of crocuses in the grass beneath the tree.
Here are the pictures from my latest visit…

The tulip tree from the north

Crocuses nearby

A closer look

Dead seed heads remain

Silhouetted against the grey sky…

…I am intrigued by these wicked-looking spikes – they must be the cores of the fallen seed-heads

The ground is still covered with the dried husks…

…which are gradually shattered

It looks like the buds are swelling – perhaps they will show more life and colour next month…
That’s it for now – we’ll meet again in April…
The tree is magnificent even without leaves. And the crocuses are wonderful on the green grass! (i’m hungry for color)
It’s interesting to see the dead seed heads. Always good to see the first signs of new buds.
Lovely display of crocuses. xx
