Leaves of the Lombardy poplar (Populus nigra ‘Italica’) in Victoria Park, Cardiff, in May
Just for a change there was a hail storm as I set out to visit the Lombardy poplar (Populus nigra ‘Italica’) in Cardiff’s Victoria Park this week. After a very dry April May has been very showery and a bit cold. I guess we have already had our summer…
On this visit the new golden leaves of last month had turned a fresh green. Here are my pictures…

The whole tall tree pictured from the north east

The tree from outside the park fence, looking from the south

Lots of leaves

Magnificent sinewy trunk

Diamond leaves against a patch of blue sky

Dark branches

At the foot of the tree just inside the railings grows a tiny maple tree…

…and beneath the maple a holly…

…growing close to the ground

One big patch of branches on the north side of the tree has leaves that are still much yellower

I love the irregularity of the branches

A wonderful buttress

Leaves sprout from the trunk

This is the ‘back’ of the tree

This bark looks as if it might fall off in flakes

Finally a general view of the poplar from the south east as I say goodbye for another month

See you again in June…
Lovely pictures of an impressive looking tree. It’s always good to see new fresh green leaves. xx
Great photos, all looking very green and lush. I also like the Maple and Holly at the base – 3 trees for the price of 1!
