Red, gold and green leaves of Parrotia persica on November 3
Much has been said about the lovely autumn foliage colour of the Persian ironwood (Parrotia persica) and at last the moment has arrived for the small tree in my garden.
I have been following it ever since the Covid-19 pandemic began in March, when I started working from home and could no longer visit the Turkish hazel (Corylus colurna) near my office in Cardiff Bay, with which I started the tree-following year.
Now I can see the golden leaves of the Parrotia from my study window as I look up from my desk…

These images of one small branch show how the change of colour has progressed…

October 26…

…October 31…

…November 3
Not all the leaves are the same colour…

This is November 3…

…and so is this

As the leaves thin out I can now see the distinctive bark again
There is plenty of interest around the tree, too…

Mahonia coming into its winter glory – great for the insects

Buddleia now gone to seed

Ivy
And the permanent backdrop to my garden is always the ash trees…

The European ash (Fraxinus excelsior)
I hate to be critical of Cardiff Council, but no one here in this leafy suburb can understand why the garden waste collections have already ended, when so many leaves have still to fall. There was a time when autumn was in September and October, but not these days.
You can see my earlier Parrotia posts here.
What lovely autumnal colours, it’s nice to see how different leaves differ in colour and how the colour changes with time.

Thanks – it is very uplifting to see as I look up from my desk…
Best wishes 🙂
It seems to have every variety of autumn coloured leaves in the same tree. Lovely.
And I have made some progress in removing the sycamore branches from the middle of the view, but not in time for this month’s post.
All the best 🙂
What a great tree for color. I especially like the photo “framed” from the center out by the cross pieces (I’m told they’re called “grilles”, hmmm). Hadn’t thought of that before.
cheers
Just double glazing to me!
Best wishes 🙂
