A few fallen leaves of the Mermaid Quay London plane trapped in a puddle
Despite strong winds here in Cardiff the London plane (Platanus × hispanica or Platanus × acerifolia) I am following in Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay, still has more leaves than many other tree species in the area.
This month the weather has been colder and wetter but with the odd day of lovely late autumn sunshine. The good thing about the rain is that it catches some of the beautiful fallen leaves in puddles, while last month they all blew away.

Leaves are gradually thinning out – this is November 4…

…and this is November 11

An abundance of green leaves with a backdrop of maple on November 4

A branch blown down by a cold north wind on November 11

Autumn colours on November 4…

…and on November 11

I hadn’t seen any seed balls recently as they had been concealed by leaves…

…but here they are

Attractive chimney pots all in a row on a hotel roof behind the plane tree…

…and a Buddleia bush – they do get everywhere
You can find all my London plane posts here…
I do love the subtle colours that leaves go this time of year. and the sound changes too, a dryness.
Did you hear that programme about the sounds of trees on radio 4 yesterday?
They had this quote from Hardy (Under the Greenwood Tree):
“To dwellers in a wood almost every species of tree has its voice as well as its feature. At the passing of the breeze the fir-trees sob and moan no less distinctly than they rock; the holly whistles as it battles with itself; the ash hisses amid its quiverings; the beech rustles while its flat boughs rise and fall…”
It’s still on the BBC Sounds app – The Sussurations of Trees.
Yes I did hear it – I thought I must add it to the tree news blog post if I do one while the programme is still available on BBC Sounds.
I have a feeling that down in Cornwall you probably are more in tune with the feelings and sounds of the seasons, being so close to the sea.
That perhaps sounds illogical and I have been watching too much Poldark!
All the best 🙂
Although I get fed up with much too much rain, I do like the way colours shine out from the wet leaves. Frances 🙂
And at least it stopped them blowing away this time!
All the best 🙂
I’m glad you had some sunshine for London plane photos–good looking with the nicely shaped canopy. Interesting that it still has quite a few rich green leaves so late.
I think autumn is getting later and later.
As I look out through my window now the ash trees are just about bare but the sycamores and hazel are still covered in golden leaves – not so much of the green now, though…
All the best 🙂
