Rose hips beside the Wharf
Last year I walked around the Wharf (former Bute East Dock) in Cardiff Bay almost every month, but in this my second year working at County Hall I am only an occasional visitor. This is partly because I am no longer following a tree beside the Wharf.
I may think I have seen it all before but I find the view is constantly changing. Here are the images from my most recent visit, in late September…

The near side of the Wharf is now fenced off for yet another building site…

…having had a great view a few months ago, now I can see very little

It was one of those changeable days with wild clouds, blue skies and squalls

Black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) in winter plumage

Common coot (Fulica atra)

Firethorn (Pyracantha) berries beside the Wharf

Woody nightshade berries (Solanum dulcamara)

Alder cones (Alnus glutinosa)

Seedhead of wild carrot (Daucus carota)

Canadian fleabane (Erigeron canadensis)

A grass or sedge or rush…

Is this what purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) looks like in autumn?

A longer view of the clump

An architectural umbellifer

Another rather attractive umbellifer with yellow flowers

I was very surprised to see the old crane on the Wharf has been painted…

…this was the crane before it was spruced up

New flowers of hemp agrimony (Eupatorium cannabinum)…

…and old flowers

I’m still not sure what this is among the Cotoneaster

Birch leaves

Alder leaves

Dead leaves…

…the hacking back of the bushes on the far side of the Wharf seems to have been done earlier this year

Still green leaves of a member of the Fabaceae family – possibly a vetch or goat’s rue

Pink water lily (Nymphaea)

Old man’s beard or traveller’s joy (Clematis vitalba)

Marsh woundwort (Stachys palustris)

A very small Buddleia flower

Bramble (Rubus fruticosus) flowers – most of the blackberries have already fruited and faded
Shorter days are drawing near…
Thank you for sharing these beautiful photo’s .The Warf looks very pretty and I love the firethorn berries.
Thanks – it’s always a lovely oasis in the city 🙂
Absolutely gorgeous photos. The plants look so good against the calm water. But how on earth did you get that gull to pose so beautifully!
When I pointed the camera it was still – one of those lucky moments when it moves and for once doesn’t ruin the shot…
All the best 🙂
Great lead photo — red and green against the blue water 🙂
Thanks.
The water changes appearance from moment to moment because of the reflected sky.
All the best 🙂
