A fallen London Plane leaf in Mermaid Quay, Cardiff
I am disappointed this month with the London plane (Platanus × hispanica or Platanus × acerifolia) I am following in Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay.
Here in South Wales we have had very wet weather for a few weeks and it has also been windy. I chose a very blustery day with sunshine and showers to take these pictures and forgot my camera, so they are taken with my iPhone and not as good as I would like.
As well as the leaves refusing to stay still for their photographs, the wind had blown all the autumn leaves from the branches and they had even been swept away from the surrounding street by the scouring breeze.

It was a blustery and squally day

A berried mountain ash (rowan) in front of the plane tree

The leaves would not stay still…

…very few were autumn gold

Some fallen leaves had been protected within the wooden fence of the Greek street cafe

A bit blurred but these were the only remaining seed balls I could see on the tree

On the corner of Bute Street stands the Packet public house

Some new leaves that arrived late in the season have been shrivelled before maturity

A few buildings to the north was a welcome sight – the former HSBC Bank at 97 Bute Street has been covered in plastic sheeting for more than a year but now it has been unwrapped as an apartment development nears completion
There’s an article about the new apartments at The Bank here.

The building is rather beautiful and was constructed in 1874 for Cory’s, the coal and shipping company

Back at work in County Hall I found another plane tree but in a more sheltered location, which still held on to some of its autumn leaves

You can find all my London plane posts here…
The London plane you are following still has a lot of leaves so you may see it covered in autumn glory yet, and it must have given the rowan some shelter as I see it still has berries. Frances
I’m not sure there is any shelter for anything in that spot!
Every day the canopy looks thinner on the plane tree without letting the autumn leaves offer a bit of a show for a while.
All the best 🙂
Welcome to my world—i.e., wind. We’re all so tired of it!
Suddenly I am imagining your streets full of tumbleweed and dust…
But I do love your images of Wyoming 🙂
It is hard to get good close up photos of trees when it’s windy. I almost always have to take one-hand-photos and use the other hand to hold the branch or twig or sometimes even the actual leaf still.
I “cheat” in this way too 🙂
All the best
