Some of the 100 elms (Ulmus ‘New Horizon’) in Pontcanna Fields, Cardiff
My tree following has not been totally successful this month. On Sunday, November 26, I was passing by and noticed that the 100 elms (Ulmus ‘New Horizon’) in Cardiff’s Pontcanna Fields were a lovely orange colour at last. It was a grey day but I thought I should catch the colour while I had the chance, so I snapped these pictures.
I had hoped to return last Sunday, expecting to see the trees almost bare, but I didn’t get out of the house, as it was snowing – and not in a good, picturesque way, but in a dank, slushy way.
So for now these images are all I have.

The elms beyond the rugby pitches

Looking along the avenue

Some trees retain more leaves than others

Looking down the middle

True autumn colour at last

The leaves are still blotchy with some kind of blight

Surprisingly some leaves are still green – this was November 26…
I will do a round-up of my elm year in January, and then move on to the next tree for 2018…
Autumn leaves are beautiful Thanks for these lovely photo’s.
Thank you. I have noticed that not every autumn is perfect for colour, though.
All the best and Merry Christmas đ
Big change over last month … very autumnal! They are beautiful against the green ground cover.
Yes, I was really holding out for the orange. I knew they could do it!
Best wishes đ
Hope the ice has cleared now Pat. We had lots of … rain
Ah, the balmy south coast!
Have a Merry Christmas, even if not a white one đ
Thank you. Blessings of the season to you and yours Pat x
And to you – thank you so much for your support this year!
I still live in hope that I will find more time to comment on your blog posts. I do read them and enjoy, but these days I can only comment from my computer at home and I’m not sitting in front of it as often as I was before I started working full time again…
Have a lovely family Christmas đ
I haven’t yet managed to return to my tree – mostly because of rain, snow and the afternoons drawing in so early.
Avenues like these are lovely. And the colours too.
Well there’s a resolution for next year! It would be great to have you back on board again.
I am enjoying your posts from Halifax but apologise that I am not always commenting – I can do it easily at my desk at home but not at work and I seem to be at work a lot of the time now!
So don’t be surprised if you get several comments from me all in one go and for several older posts.
All the best and a Merry Christmas đ
with the grey sky they look a lovely dusky orange, so subtle, it makes a nice change from the usual bright in-your-face oranges, the way each tree’s leaves change colour and fall differently reminds us they are all individuals, something tree following has made me more aware off,
keep safe and warm in this cold weather, Frances
I’m afraid I do tend to visit on blue sky days!
You look after yourself, too đ
sorry Pat my comment about bright orange was not about your photos, nor a criticism of any bright photos, I was thinking of all the endless photos of bright autumn tree colour, on the internet, in books, magazine etc. and I just meant the subtle colour here was a nice contrast, I love your blue sky photos, Frances
Don’t worry, I didn’t take it as criticism!
Do have yourself a merry little Christmas đ
