Autumn leaves on one of the elm trees
Another month has passed and the 100 disease-resistant elms, Ulmus ‘New Horizon’, in Cardiff’s Pontcanna Fields still seem very green.
There are signs of autumn if you look for them – although not the glorious orange hues I had been hoping for.
Quite a few leaves have turned lemon yellow, but we have had a windy few weeks, so most of these leaves are already on the ground all around the elm avenue.

Approaching the elms – the brown leaves in the foreground are from ash trees and sycamores

Looking back to the South-West

This was the middle of the day, but the sun is low in the sky now

Many leaves are still green – these show the veins very well

These are the second-growth Lammas leaves, still fresh

Yellow leaves hanging on

A fallen yellow leaf

All leaves rot eventually

The swallows have left now, but there are still crows

Although each elm tree is different, they all have a neat shape

The daisies in the grass and clover go on forever

Looking back from the riverside

The winter-white black-headed gulls (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) hang out beside the weir on the river

I really cannot thank you enough for showing the Elms and their transition into Autumn, they thrill me.
I was expecting a deal of colour locally but it seems that we are to get the tail end of a hurricane soon, so the leaves will probably all be ripped from the trees.
I’m pleased. Although Annie Irving seems to have caught the elms’ autumn colours even better in her blog post a year ago here, but maybe November will be more golden than October.
Yes I see we have the end of Hurricane Ophelia on its way. I do hope our trees miss out this time!
Best wishes đŸ™‚
they are quite impressive when looking from a distance or under them on the long path, my downey birches go yellow not orange, they can look lovely when there is a lot and the trees look like butter yellow balls, interesting seeing the fauna and flora in the park too, Frances
I am only just realising that every autumn is different in terms of the colours. Yellow is definitely the colour this year, especially for the roadside lime trees.

The Leaf Fairies must be busy elsewhere … đŸ˜‰
So that’s who does it!
