Elms in Pontcanna Fields, Cardiff, on July 10
This month for a change I visited the 100 disease-resistant elms, Ulmus ‘New Horizon’, in Pontcanna Fields in the early evening, having usually made it a morning date.
This was after a few weeks of very dry, sunny weather, so I was pleased to see that the trees were all still very green and healthy.
Over the next 24 hours we had thoroughly soaking rain, so hopefully that has also topped up their resources.
There isn’t much more to say, really, apart from to show you the latest pictures – I am running late and risk missing my own tree following link box!

Looking along the avenue of 100 elms towards Blackweir

There was Cardiff schools rugby training going on in the field

Deep shade on the eastern side

The west is the sunny side at this time of the evening

The leaves seemed to be turning their backs to the fresh wind, even though they must be used to the prevailing wind from the west and south west

Lichen

Leaves sprouting from the base of one of the elms

More sprouts, but these look a little stunted…

…a closer look at the stunted leaves

I took a picture of these leaves because they looked fresh and light green and I wondered if they were Lammas leaves, a second flush in July and August…

…looking closer I saw this dangling lime (linden) fruit
Find out more about the 100 elms here.
Or find out more about tree following here.
Now I have (almost) moved to Yorkshire, I’ll be needing to find a good tree to follow in Halifax.
Flippin’ ‘eck, Lucy. I’ve rather lost connection with your blog after your camera catastrophe.
I will catch up immediately!
And yes, please DO find a good tree and join us again, any month will do!
Best wishes and happy memories 🙂
Interesting “ladder-like” arrangement of elm leaves (first photo, background). Is that typical? I have seen only a few elms–in the wild in the northeast corner of Wyoming (U. americana). I don’t remember that about them.
I must admit I hadn’t thought twice about that. These particular elms have quite small leaves, which maybe leads to that effect. Although I’m pretty sure the pattern is alternating leaves.
All the best 🙂
