The Royal Horticultural Society’s Cardiff Show in Bute Park was better than ever this year. We went on the Sunday, which was a sunny but cool day, and here are a few things that took my fancy…

The dragon was made from scrap metal by Dorset Forge and Fabrication, based in Sherborne (http://dorsetforgeandfabrication.co.uk)
Into the floral marquees…

Officially the best exhibit in the floral marquees was this wonderful display of daffodils from R and A Scamp Quality Daffodils, based in Falmouth, Cornwall (http://qualitydaffodils.com)

I love a good Heuchera – this is Southern Comfort on the Plantagogo stand (http://www.plantagogo.com)
Out to the trade stands…

A splendid gorilla – yours for £599.99 from the Garden Furniture Centre (http://www.gardenfurniturecentre.co.uk)

…in a small bird-bath at £180 by Nyasha Mabtka on the Mara Sculpture stand (http://www.marasculpture.com)
Then there were the show gardens…

Middleton – Paradise Regained, a show garden from the National Botanic Garden of Wales to highlight the upcoming Heritage Lottery funded restoration of the Middleton estate on which the garden is located (http://www.gardenofwales.org.uk)

Office Box by Robert Hughes Garden Design (http://www.roberthughesgardendesign.co.uk

Alfresco by Victoria Wade Landscapes (http://www.victoriawade.co.uk)

This show garden was Nurture in Nature by Shani Lawrence Garden Designs (http://www.shanilawrence.co.uk)
Back to the floral marquees…

Exotic white Mandevilla from Mandy Plants (http://www.mandyplants.com)

Bleeding hearts – I bought a big one in a pot – although I see they are now called Lamprocapnos spectabilis and not Dicentra spectabilis, which was a blow to the plant knowledge I thought I had!

Chrysanthemum called Lollipop from Chrysanthemums Direct (http://www.chrysanthemumsdirect.co.uk)

I love Hostas – this one is called Patriot (http://www.brookfieldplants.com)

A box of tiny Hostas, clockwise from top left, Teenie Weenie Bikini, Iced Lemon, Hydon Sunset, Lime Fizz, Cracker Crumb and Dragon Tails
Back outside for some more trade stands…

Metal mesh owl on the Brodco modern sheds stand (http://www.brodco.co.uk)

Metal cockerels (roosters) at £20 each from Patio and Terrace (http://www.patioandterrace.co.uk)
Time for something to eat – lamb burgers. There was nowhere to sit, so we ate under a big old chestnut tree. It’s funny that the show takes place in Bute Park, not far from the Paulownia tree I am following this year.

The horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) will soon be in flower – many others in the city are further on than this one
After we left the show, the trees kept coming as we walked into the Edwardian Cathays area of the city centre…

On the grassy verge by the university were dandelions (Taraxacum officinale) like miniature chrysanthemums and daisies (Bellis perennis)
And finally…
I like those rusty metal flowers. I haven’t been to a flower show in years. It’s a great way to spend a day isn’t it. Did you buy lots of goodies?
Eileen @ In My Playroom
Thanks for commenting. I didn’t buy much apart from the bleeding hearts and some sausages, really.
Oh, and I had a £5 RHS voucher so put that towards a pair of those little snippety flower dead-headers I had often thought about but not bothered with. Very useful and not clutter, honest!
All the best (enjoying your blog every day so I must comment on it more often!)
Love the metal Cockrels and of course all those wonderful flowers.
Yes the cockerels seem to have been a bargain at only £20! They look better in sunshine, obviously…
All the best 🙂
I know the “Dicentra” as Dutchman’s Trousers!
I like that! And I can see what you mean – although I’m not sure I have ever seen a painting of a Dutchman in pink breeches…
All the best 🙂
Gorgeous! I love that owl …
Thank you Pat.
Ah, we all love owls!
Best wishes:)
Oh my goodness! So many lovely things! I love the hippo in the bird bath, and the owl sculpture and the daffs especially. :o)
Yes, I thought the hippo was “really neat” as they say.
All the best 🙂
Great post. I went on the Friday, it was my first time at the Cardiff show. I was particularly taken by the row of magnolia trees just outside the entrance by the castle, they looked magnificent.
Thanks for commenting – I am now following your blog and enjoyed the latest post about St Govan’s Chapel – I love little buildings hemmed in by rock like that. Others can read it here.
Pleased you liked our Cardiff magnolias. They are going over now, as are the cherry blossoms. But there is always something of interest in Bute Park!
All the best 🙂
Ah, thanks For the link squirrelbasket. I shall definitely be making the short trip back to Cardiff soon, Bute Park is an amazing space.
Love the Welsh dragon, and the roosters, too! The double hellebore is unusual (and gorgeous).
Yes, the hellebore looks quite erect for a hellebore, they usually droop their heads so…
All the best 🙂

I particularly love the sculptures, especially the dragon. even if he does look quite terrifying!
And to think he is made from scrap…
