Rest Bay, Porthcawl, on Christmas Day
I always feel the days between Christmas and New Year are like the useless nemontemi days of the Aztecs. In that week we are usually busy doing nothing apart from driving around while I try to snap some pictures. But only now am I sitting still for long enough to share them.
Firstly, here is a refreshing walk along the Wales Coast Path at Rest Bay, Porthcawl, on Christmas Day in the afternoon. It was one of the few days lately when it didn’t rain.
Overlooking the beach is the Rest Hotel, built in the last couple of decades of the 19th century by Doctor James Lewis and his wife Charlotte as a convalescent home for ironworkers, colliers, quarryworkers and their families. Read more about its history on the hotel’s website here.

Rest Bay, Porthcawl, looking over in the direction of The Mumbles, I think…

There were many people with their dogs on the beach on Christmas Day afternoon…

I love the rock pools left when the tide has gone out…

Wood washed up on the high tide…

The tide was well out on this occasion…
Also overlooking Rest Bay is the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, founded in 1891. It is a “links” course, beside the sea, with no trees to hamper the fairways. Read more here.

Looking from the beach to the coast path, with part of the golf course on the right…

The Royal Porthcawl clubhouse is a quite recent building…

Shingly shore at Rest Bay…

Rope washed up at high tide…

Bright turquoise fishing nets on the shore…

Not sure if you would have time to dodge the golf ball with your name on it!

The boardwalk at Rest Bay was opened in July 2010…

This is part of the Wales Coast Path that goes all the way around the country…

A great place to sit and watch the sea…

Looking over a lichen-covered wall…

I like lichen…

Although it was a grey day, somewhere the sun tried to peep through…

I love what a bit of Photoshop ‘auto correcting’ did to these bright clouds…
I like lichen, too.
We didn’t have many days when the rain didn’t make an appearance Pat! Yesterday was amazing walking along Middle Chine … cold … but uplifting!
Love your photos. Thanks for sharing.
What a wonderful place to go for a walk. I enjoyed reading about “The Rest”, the sea air and view must have been of great benefit for it;s residents and it is lovely to read it is still in use today.
